Flora and Fauna

Here at Galiana we maintain a deep connection with the nature around us. We strive to honor and cherish everything Mother Earth has given to us. Every tree, every stem of grass, every flower is a gift, every song of a bird, every deer, doe, snail and spider is a welcomed guest here. And we are happy to share these miracles with you to honour and love them just the way we do.

In the magical woods around Galiana you’ll find all kinds of species of trees. Most often you will come across oak, maple, birch, beech, basswood, as well as willow, hickory, chestnut, white oak, spruce, pine, mountain ash and many more.

Common meadow flowers on and around Galiana land include dandelion, Queen Anne’s lace, goldenrod, and black-eyed Susan. Wild sarsaparilla, Solomon’s seal, Indian pipe, bunchberry, and goldthread flourish amid the forests in the area. Among protected plants are all species of fern, bayberry, native orchids and trillium. If you walk around in the woods attentively, you might come across some of the six plant species that were listed as threatened or endangered in 2003, like the sandplain gerardia, American hart’s-tongue fern, and Leedy’s roseroot.

Some 600 species of mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles are found in New York state, of which more than 450 species are common. Mammals at Galiana are in abundance including all kinds of mouse species, the snowshoe hare, cottontails, woodchuck, squirrel, muskrat, and raccoon. Deer running around is a common sight here. If you are very lucky, you might see a wolverine, elk or moose, but sadly they were mostly wiped out during the 19th century. The otter, mink, marten, and fisher populations were also drastically reduced; but the beaver, nearly eliminated by fur trappers, had come back strongly by 1940.

The most common year-round residents at Galiana, birds, are the crow, hawk, and several types of woodpecker. There are many summer visitors, of which the bluebird is included. The wild turkey, which disappeared during the 19th century, was successfully re-established in the 1970s. The house (or English) sparrow has been in the surrounding woods since its introduction in New York in the 1800s.

Here at Galiana we are planning to make a special friendship with the animals and birds that live nearby, especially during the wintertime by making special feeding places for deer and bird-tables for birds.

As we are blessed by having a stream on the Galiana land, you will easily find the common toad and several species of frog.

As in all natural woods we do have all kinds of insect varieties buzzing around at Galiana and especially the praying mantis is looked upon as a friend (since it eats insects that prey on crops and trees).

Of course, this is not even close to a full list of all the amazing living creatures we have at Galiana. But why don’t you come and explore for yourself, see what you can find and give us your contribution of getting to know Galiana even better?

In the future we would like to enrich the flora at Galiana by creating beautiful and tasteful gardens, paths and places to contemplate and grow in. We are planning to grow bamboo, some apple trees and other fruit-bearing species, our own organic vegetables and greens. By creating all that, we intend to use everything nature has given to us already, keeping the surroundings wild and natural. One of our main beliefs here is that a person has to be creative, not destructive, and a creative person is someone who makes life more meaningful, who gives the planet more beauty, who has a reverence for life and nature, who spreads more vibes of love around him or herself.
